The Dallas Police Department is promoting its Operation Identification program as one of its many efforts to reduce crime. Operation Identification encourages people to engrave or permanently mark their valuable property with their driver’s license or Texas identification number. Marking property aids in the recovery of lost or stolen property and its return to the rightful owner. It also helps in the prosecution of criminals and deters further crime.

Marking your property with an engraving pen makes it very difficult for a thief to remove the number. Electric engravers may be purchased at a hardware store or borrowed from your local Dallas Police substation. Valuables that cannot be marked with an engraver, such as jewelry or heirlooms, should be photographed. People should also keep a written inventory of their valuables, including brand and model names along with the serial numbers, dates of purchase and cost.
